Advanced Track Skills Clinic
December 13 & 14, 2008 at Hellyer Park Velodrome, San Jose
This December 13th and 14th join National Championship medalist Giovanni Rey, and former professional and Wenzel Cycling coach James Hibbard, for a weekend of advanced skill building at the Hellyer Park Velodrome in San Jose.
This four session two day clinic will help you to develop the necessary advanced skillset for riding both endurance and sprint track events and will include discussion, track time, drills as well as video analysis.
All levels are welcome.
Session 1- Saturday December 13th Hellyer Velodrome 8:30 am-12:30 pm More novice members of the group will rent bicycles and we will discuss the basics of riding the track. We will also address basic issues of fit, and equipment selection (including gear selection) on an event by event basis. After this, more experienced track cyclists will move directly into team pursuit exchange drills. If one is only attending this session there is no cost beyond the $5 bike rental fee and $5 track usage fee. These costs are included in the registration fee for those who are attending all four sessions of the camp. Session 2- Saturday December 13th Hellyer Velodrome 1:30 pm- 4:30pm Before starting the session there will be a “classroom” period where we will discuss how track cycling has traditionally been divided between sprint and endurance events, and analyze the type of training and skills required for the wildly different riders that usually contest these various track events. We will also discuss the periodization basics for both endurance and sprint oriented track cyclists. Moving to the velodrome, the remainder of the session will focus on riding 200 meter time trials and standing start technique. Session 3- Sunday December 14th Hellyer Velodrome 8:30 am-12:30 am The focus of session three is on the skill-intensive track team events; the Madison, team pursuit and team sprint. Video cameras will be on-hand in order to examine team pursuit formation and exchanges and proper Madison technique will be demonstrated practiced and evaluated. The session will end with a team pursuit match up. Session 4 Sunday December 14th Hellyer Velodrome 1:30 pm-4:30 pm The final session will delve deeper into questions of how the track can be of benefit to the road cyclist. Giovanni will also discuss strength training for the sprint-oriented track cyclist. We will conclude with a short scratch race and a discussion of how the race unfolded tactically, and how clinic participants employed their particular strengths.
